Therapy. External. A poultice prepared from bruised digitalis leaves and warm water, or the tincture incorporated into a warm flax-seed poultice, has given relief in renal congestion and urinary suppression. It is a dangerous procedure, however, as there is no way of determining the quantity absorbed, and death has been known to result from excessive urination and exhaustion.
Therapy. Digitalis is the direct heart stimulant. Its influence is sure and plainly apparent in marked sthenic conditions. In prostration or profound weakness, in sudden failure from violent injury, from surgical shock or from acute poisoning, or in the crisis of extreme exhausting or protracted disease, its influence given in conjunction with general stimulants is decisive and satisfactory.
Action, Medical Uses, and Dosage. (See Digitalis.) Infusion of digitalis is the most efficient preparation of foxglove, and is particularly applicable when a diuretic action is desired. It should be remembered that digitalis acts slowly and the infusion should not be pushed too fast, lest an over action result from it a day or two after its administration. Dose, 1 to 4 fluid drachms, 3 times a day, carefully watching its action.
