From the sources

Action and Therapy. Astringent and sedative. This drug is reputed efficient in gastric and hepatic disorders dependent upon splenic enlargement, especially when caused by malarial influence. It has given good results in splenic hypertrophy, with expressionless countenance and sallow, doughy skin; also in splenic congestion and subacute splenitis, the pain of which is not much aggravated by pressure.

Therapy. It overcomes indigestion and malassimilation under these circumstances, by its influence upon the portal circulation, and is thus a stomach remedy of much value. It is not so direct a remedy in acute inflammations of the liver and spleen. When the above specific indications are present as a complication of any chronic condition, or with syphilis or scrofula or in general glandular disarrangements, the agent is indicated. Bronchitis, chronic pneumonitis and asthma are found present with the above general symptoms. Ovarian and uterine irregularities with such conditions will also be benefited by its use.

Properties and Uses. The root of this plant is medicinal, but is not very powerful or reliable. It is a mild stimulating astringent, with slight tonic qualities, and reported to be nervine and expectorant. It is principally useful as awash in sore mouth and weak ulcers; and also in chronic diarrhea as an injection for chronic gonorrhea and leucorrhea, and as a local application (by powder) on mild chancres.

Action, Medical Uses, and Dosage. This syrup has been found very valuable in coughs, pulmonary and hepatic affections. The dose is from 1 fluid drachm to ½ fluid ounce, 3 or 4 times a day. In smaller doses, frequently repeated, it forms an excellent expectorant.
