action_antiparasitic. Traditional medicinal qualities include expulsion of intestinal parasites (Ascaris vermicularis and lumbricoides) and treatment of malarial intermittents; scientific research has shown artemisinin to be particularly beneficial in balancing the microbiology of the GI tract.

action_bitter_tonic. In small doses Artemisia annua acts as a stimulant tonic, improves the appetite, and is useful in atonic states of the gastro-intestinal tract, in tonic dyspepsia (especially when due to alcoholic excesses), in flatulent colic and in obstinate diarrhea; it was at one time a popular remedy for jaundice.

action_anticancer. Artemisinin becomes cytotoxic to cancer cells in the presence of ferrous iron; because most cancer cells have high iron intake and high cell-surface transferrin receptor concentrations, artemisinin selectively kills them by generating free radicals, and showed broad-spectrum cytotoxicity against several human tumor cell lines including P-388, A-549, HT-29, MCF-7 and KB.
