From the sources

Therapy. Trillium influences mildly the nerve supply of the organs of the thorax. It assists heart remedies in relieving ample functional irritation. It cures catarrhal bronchitis when there is very profuse expectoration. It soothes the cough of incipient phthisis, especially where there is a tendency to hemorrhage, over which it has a marked controlling influence. It restrains excessive action of the kindneys. At one time it had an excellent reputation in the control of diabetes insipidus. It controls uterine hemorrhage of a passive character to an excellent advantage, especially menorrhagia and metrorrhagia. Excessive vaginal catarrh is restrained by it.

Properties and Uses. The root is possessed of relaxing and stimulating properties, which act with moderate promptness; and leaves a mild tonic and astringent impression that is quite persistent. The mucous membranes receive most of its influence; and it is used in tenacious mucous discharges, with debility, as in chronic dysentery, leucorrhea, catarrh, etc.

Description. Natural Order, Smilaceae; sub-order, Trilliaceae. Genus TRILLIUM: Low herbs, with stout and unbranched stems from four to twelve inches high; bearing at the summit a single whorl of three large and broad leaves, and a single large flower in the axil of the leaf-whorl.

Description. Natural Order, Caprifoliaceae. In the same Family with sambucus and viburnum. Stem several from the same root, two to four feet high, round, hollow, very leafy to the top, and covered with soft hairs. Leaves opposite, oval, four to six inches long, pointed, abruptly narrowed below but connate round the stem, downy beneath.
